NSW and Victorian clubs take out 2011 Canberra Cup
The Sydney Northern Beaches Breakers, Central Coast Pirates and Footscray water polo clubs have claimed major honours over the weekend at the 2011 Canberra Cup.
Sydney Northern Beaches successfully defended their 2010 titles, taking out the women’s and girls under-18 divisions, while Cup debutants Footscray and Central Coast dominated the men’s and boy’s draw.
Sydney Northern Beaches defeated current ACT Champions Nordek 10-6 in the women’s final and overcame a physical Ovens & Murray side 16-6 in the girl’s final. Nordek’s Angela Gaskin was named women’s MVP and Sydney’s Maddie Spencer took home the girl’s award.
Footscray dominated the men’s draw, going undefeated into the final against Nordek. In a fast and physical game, Footscray overcame the ACT Champions 15-9 with a stunning display by Aussie Sharks squad member and eventual MVP, Jarrod Gilchrist.
In the boy’s division, the Central Coast Pirates line up, which included Australian representatives Reed Cotterill and Daniel Robinson, were able to outclass the field to beat Nordek 13-3 in the final. Anthony Hyrthantos was named MVP.
Hosted by the Canberra Water Polo Academy, the Canberra Cup began in 2007 as a junior competition, but soon grew to include senior teams. The tournament is designed to support the growth of water polo in regional Australia, and build better networks throughout the water polo community.
Canberra Water Polo Academy director, Matt Turnbull said it was great to see teams from Victoria and the New South Wales Central Coast competing this year.
“The tournament is growing every year, and it is fantastic for young ACT players to be exposed to a high-level of competition,” Turnbull said.
“The tournament is a great way to start the summer and I hope to continue the tradition, well into the future.”
Next year’s tournament will be held in November 2012. Keep an eye on the Canberra Water Polo Academy website for details: www.waterpoloact.com.au

See Article featuring our Dave Brady on the Australian Water Polo Website.
The recent 16 and under National Club Championships had a lot of highlights, including the involvement of two members of the water polo community with playing, coaching and refereeing as part of their resumes. As well as that, they are both deaf.
Both David Brady and Jamie Lee Lewis show us all that a hearing impairment is not an impediment to participation in water polo in all its elements.
Both are long time participants in the sport as athletes and they have both broadened their involvement in the game to keep their enjoyment and involvement alive.
Jamie Lee is an elite player for the National Water Polo League gold-medal winning Brisbane Barracudas. She also coaches and referees.
At the 16 and under National Championships Jamie Lee was the appointed referee for All Hallows and was given the honour of being the goal-judge for the Girls gold medal game.
David Brady is a player who was a driving force behind Australia’s participation in the Deaflympics He still plays for Nordek in the ACT competition, but now spends more of his time working for Touch Football Australia as their National Business Operations Manager.
At the 16 and under National Championships he was Assistant Coach to Don Cameron of the ACT Fins Boys team who finished a creditable 17th at the event.

BUNNINGS BBQ
We have a BBQ at Bunning’s coming up on Sunday 11 September. We will be asking each team to be rostered on to the BBQ for an hour each on this day. This is a great fund raiser for our club and we need our members to be involved cooking snags for hungry shoppers. I will send the team roster out a bit later.
We were extremely lucky to get this spot as they are very hard to come by but someone has cancelled and our very influential President has secured a spot for us. Thanks Paddy!

CANBERRA SOUTHERN CROSS CLUB RAFFLE AT JAMISON
As part of our sponsorship responsibility with the Canberra Southern Cross Club we are
required to sell raffle tickets at the club once a month. This is a very easy task but the
responsibility falls on the same few people each time. Our duty is on Thursdays from 6 to 7.30pm.
If you are able to volunteer an hour and a half of your time it would be much appreciated.
The job entails sitting at a table & the customers come to you to buy tickets.
It is SO EASY! Sponsorship allows us to keep our registration fees lower than any other
club in Canberra so we are relying on you to HELP OUT.
